Faster Than Your Strength: Mosiah 2-6

"...it is not requisite than a man should run faster than he has strength." -Mosiah 4:27

I could list forever the things we are told we need to do in order to be good people: give to the poor, keep the commandments, don't judge others, be kind, be patient, be submissive to the will of the Father, fulfill your church responsibilities, and on and on and on. It can seem so overwhelming! How can any one person do all of those things?

And this is when the doubt creeps in, and the fear, and the self-loathing and bitterness and pain and worry.

Stop it right now.

Yes, we are counseled to do all these things, but we are also counseled that our best is enough. Grace is a beautiful, beautiful thing. Sincerity is much more important that perfection-- because, guess what, perfection is never going to be possible for us in this life. We need to try really, really hard, yes...but we can't be constantly beating ourselves up about the places and times we fall short of the ultimate mark. It is not required that you do more than you are able! Heavenly Father knows your abilities and what you're capable of. Often times, it is more than you think, but He still recognizes our limits and knows when we are truly trying our best.

You don't have to be the best at everything, do everything, or say yes to everyone. To "simplify" is good. If we take the time and effort to focus on how we aren't good enough, we waste time and effort which could be used to serve our fellow man-- and by serving them, serve our God.

Focus on what you CAN do, not on what you can't. What's the point in wasting the time and energy? Heavenly Father needs doers now, and every little thing helps. Even one grain of rice can complete a meal. Never devalue your contributions. They're needed, and you're needed, and every little bit counts. Don't worry about needing to do more than you can. Simply do what you can.

I know you're far more capable than you believe, and I know that we are doing well if we are doing our best. We're all running together at different speeds, and I know that God will never require us to run harder or further or faster than our bodies physically can. I know He loves you and is cheering you on from the sidelines. Be diligent, be serious. If you're honestly working your hardest, you will not lose.

Now take a deep breath, and finish that race.
